Today’s sunshine found Hana and me on the Downs for a picnic. As usual I brought the camera and managed to snap this photo of a bird taking off. Unfortunately it’s not in perfect focus because the autofocus on this Tamron 70-300mm lens can only be considered fast by glacial standards. Fortunately, this cyclist passedContinue reading “Takeoff!”

Royal Fort Garden
At lunchtime today I went for a walk in Royal Fort Garden. It was the first really summery day of the year, and a lovely day to eat lunch outside. These daffodils are in front of the physics building (left) and Royal Fort House (right). This robin was very tame. Given that I was satContinue reading “Royal Fort Garden”
It’s spring!
This is the back of Osborne Villas, as seen from the tops of the buildings on Woodland Road. This chap was sitting on a bench in Brandon Hill park one lunchtime, reading. Hana thought it was me! Slightly offended – that guy was probably in his 60s and bald with glasses. Perhaps Hana needs glassesContinue reading “It’s spring!”
Stag party
OK, well not quite a stag party. But I did take a photo of a stag in Ashton Court. The focus isn’t perfect, because the grass in the foreground seemed to throw the autofocus. I guess it just proves their camouflage is effective 🙂 In other wildlife-related news, we saw a worm.
My first attempt at a panorama
Recently, Paul recommended I use Hugin for stitching panoramas, having used it himself for a panorama taken from the top of the H H Wills physics building. Before I spent ages finding a decent location, I thought it would be wise to figure out how exposure lock works, and to make sure I could useContinue reading “My first attempt at a panorama”
Grey industrialism
Yet another day finds me at Bristol dockside during my lunch hour. I wish there more places with easy walking distance of my office. The weather was miserable today. It was grey and rainy, so here are a couple of black and white pictures to match.
Springtime in Bristol
From the title, you were probably expecting some shots of nature. But no – these photos are taken from a couple of walks around Bristol docks with Paul and Ian. This week has been the first sunny week since last year and it was really good weather for taking photos on film. As this filmContinue reading “Springtime in Bristol”
Shots of Bristol
This week I shot another roll of black & white film in my SLR. Last night I developed it, and tonight I’ve scanned and uploaded the highlights for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately I think I overdeveloped the film a little, so some of the brighter areas are burnt out. Never mind. First of all, hereContinue reading “Shots of Bristol”
On top of the world
Well, on top of the roof of the Bristol University physics department, which is a pretty tall building on top of a pretty tall hill. This afternoon I managed to get access to go up there with some colleagues. Unfortunately I’d just finished a roll of film in my SLR, but I managed to borrowContinue reading “On top of the world”
Box camera
This morning was a very foggy one across Bristol, so I decided to take my camera to work and find something for this week’s Photo Challenge – framing your photos with a box. So you’ll understand why these photos are all taken through a cardboard box! Fog is my favourite weather – mainly because ofContinue reading “Box camera”
