Since moving into a new house that has a garden, I decided to buy a chimenea – a traditional Mexican wood-fired outdoor heater and stove. Last night, I invited a couple of friends round for some beers and a curry on the patio, and needless to say, the appeal of playing with fire was tooContinue reading “Playing with fire”

A spider’s web
This evening in my garden I very nearly walked through a large spider web. I stopped for a second and admired the way the low evening sun was illuminating the spider and web from both sides, and then I rushed indoors and grabbed my macro lens – here’s the result.
A weekend in Center Parcs
Over the Bank Holiday weekend, I visited the Sherwood Forest Center Parcs with Hannah and my family. As usual, I took at least one camera. I decided to take my trusty DSLR, as well a newly-bought waterproof 35mm camera, as we were intending to go swimming and canoeing. I shall try to piece my holidayContinue reading “A weekend in Center Parcs”
How things change
Recently, I would say that photography is my favourite hobby. But it wasn’t always that way. Throughout my childhood, I’ve taken pictures of important occasions on single-use cameras. My parents would always buy me a single-use camera before a family holiday, for example. I wasn’t interested in the camera, though. A few years ago (2005,Continue reading “How things change”
Dad’s retirement
Recently on my blog I posted about using flash bulbs with an old box camera. The photos in this post are taken with said box camera, and the indoor ones are using flash bulbs. This is my first attempt at using flash bulbs, and indeed at any flash photography on film. I had a bitContinue reading “Dad’s retirement”
Street scene
This week’s Photo Challenge theme is “street scene”. This isn’t a particularly inspiring shot, but unfortunately the rain started just as I took it. It’ll have to do!
Flashbulbs
A while back, I bought a Conway Synchronised box camera which came with a Coro Flash included. More recently I managed to get hold of some flash bulbs for it, but had trouble using them. Using a multimeter and some paperclips I tested each stage of the flashgun and the synchronised trigger mechanism in theContinue reading “Flashbulbs”
Sprocket holes
Sprocket holes in 35mm film are usually outside the boundary of the picture. But the other day, Paul showed me some of his pictures taken on an Ilford Sporti 4 which include the holes in the picture and it got me thinking*. I decided to run some 35mm film through my LOMO Lubitel and seeContinue reading “Sprocket holes”

Photos from a Soviet camera
These are the first photos I’ve taken with my Lomo Lubitel 166. It’s my first TLR, and my first camera which takes square photos. You might not think it would make much difference, but I like the square format because it saves having to decide whether to go landscape or portrait. The Lubitel has gearedContinue reading “Photos from a Soviet camera”
