Cumberland Basin in the evening

It’s the Bristol Balloon Fiesta this weekend and tonight at 6pm there was scheduled to be a mass ascent of 100 hot air balloons near the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Paul and I checked my ephemeris to find a good location (it’s a really useful app) and set off to Cumberland Basin, which affords good viewsContinue reading “Cumberland Basin in the evening”

Bristol campus with a Mamiya TLR

I decided to treat myself to a Mamiya C220 medium format twin-lens reflex camera. It takes square pictures with 6×6cm negatives. When shooting with old cameras, the golden rule is to try it before you rely on it, so I took it out for a lunchtime photowalk and photographed the “usual suspects” – things nearContinue reading “Bristol campus with a Mamiya TLR”

A walk on the Downs

Nathan and I went for a walk on Bristol Downs today, hoping to find some pictures of sport for this week’s Photo Challenge. Two local football teams were playing each other in training, so I stopped to take a few photos. This one was the best. Then the heavens opened and it started to pourContinue reading “A walk on the Downs”

Bristol Harbour Festival

OK, so this is a slight scam. I went to Bristol Harbour on three occasions recently. Only one was the Harbour Festival but I’ve bundled all the pictures into one post. They’re in chronological order. The black & white pictures were taken in early July when Hannah and I were visited by Fraser and Suzie.Continue reading “Bristol Harbour Festival”

Crew’s Hole and Feeder Weir

Recently I went for a walk along the River Avon in a part of Bristol called Crew’s Hole. I walked past the place where the river splits into the Feeder canal. The canal is protected by Netham Lock which joins up with Bristol’s floating harbour, while the river goes on ahead to flow over Netham weir.Continue reading “Crew’s Hole and Feeder Weir”

Another go at infrared

Getting the exposure right with infrared photography is notoriously hard. Last time I tried infrared, back in Spring, I made a roll of widely bracketed shots and compared them to meter readings of visible light. I calculated that whatever the meter said, I needed to add 9 stops[1]. Having come up with this value IContinue reading “Another go at infrared”

Bristol, but hold the bleach

For these pictures of Bristol, I tried a technique called bleach bypass. The images were shot on colour film, underexposed by one stop and then during colour development, I skipped the bleaching step, so you end up with a black & white image superimposed over the colour image. It does really strange things to theContinue reading “Bristol, but hold the bleach”

Using 35mm film in a 120 camera

You quite often see pictures shot on 35mm film that include the sprocket holes. To do this, you need a camera that takes bigger film than 35mm film – such as 120 film. I’ve tried using 35mm film in my LOMO Lubitel before with reasonable success, except that the red window fogged the film inContinue reading “Using 35mm film in a 120 camera”

Avon Gorge and other stuff

This film has been in my Canon AE-1 Program for a while, so this assortment of unconnected photos go back a while. Unfortunately the film curled pretty badly while drying and I wasn’t able to scan it properly. Quite a few of these pictures have Newton’s rings in them – rainbow-coloured splodges across the middleContinue reading “Avon Gorge and other stuff”
