I visited my parents this weekend. Both of my brothers were also at home, because their birthdays are both in May. We were treated to beautiful, sunny weather on Friday. My brothers played hockey in the garden but I was too lazy to join in, so I broke out my telephoto lens and tried myContinue reading “A sunny weekend”

Isn’t she lovely?
I snapped this portrait of Hana while we were away in Wells for a few days (more traditional tourist pics to follow!). I thought it was a good picture in the first place, but I followed this glamour tutorial* to give the image some further touching up. It’s the first time I’ve tried this kindContinue reading “Isn’t she lovely?”
Hana through a new lens
Today my new 50mm f/1.8 lens arrived. It’s hailing outside and there isn’t much to point a camera at indoors, but Hana sat thinking so I snapped one of her. I shot this with the aperture wide open, and I’m pleased with the result. It’s my fastest lens by a long way, and I thinkContinue reading “Hana through a new lens”
Another portrait
This is another portrait of Hana, along the same lines as many I’ve done before. But this time, inspired by Stu’s recent challenge entry, I had a go at lighting the background with a coloured flash. It’s OK, but the LCD on my camera isn’t very good and since looking at the photo on myContinue reading “Another portrait”
A quad-light portrait
This week’s challenge from Stu was Limitations. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with the most fantastic idea. What would you shoot if time, money and skills were no issue? Then work within your limitations to realise your dream. See what unique surprises occur. I’ve always fancied taking someContinue reading “A quad-light portrait”
Portraits of Hana
Today I read about some various techniques for lighting portraits. Of course it’s not good just reading about things – you have to try them. These photos were all lit using one flash camera left, 45° from Hana, and one camera right at a lower power, 90° from Hana. I’m pleased with the way HanaContinue reading “Portraits of Hana”
More experiments with film
After reasonable success with my first roll of film, I’ve now had my second roll developed. Here are the best shots from that selection. I’m rather pleased with the compositions and the way the lens behaves. But I’m not so keen on the noise in dark areas of the film, so next time I willContinue reading “More experiments with film”
A stroll along the canal
This evening I decided to take a stroll along the canal near Atherstone with my parents, brother Edmund and girlfriend Hana. It was a really nice evening for a walk and we covered about three miles.
