Just a simple shot of the evening sunlight coming in the window and falling upon a vase of roses.

Kumquat tree
For Christmas, I was given a kumquat tree. Miraculously, it has survived thus far and so I photographed it for this week’s fruit-themed Photo Challenge. I had intended to make a more elaborate still life composition, but when I looked at it, I thought the contrast of the gnarly tree trunk and the smooth fruitContinue reading “Kumquat tree”
Tear
I’m not taking or posting enough photos at the moment so I decided to jump into this week’s Photo Challenge after a few weeks off. The theme is movement. I remember some months ago finding a mini strobe light in a charity shop and for ages I’ve been meaning to take an action shot usingContinue reading “Tear”
Lens test: Canon FL, FD and EF 50mm f/1.4 vs f/1.8
Some time ago I compared the EF and FD versions of the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It wasn’t exactly a fair test because the EF lens fits natively on my DSLR, while the FD lens needs an adapter with an optic. Now I am fortunate enough to own a Canon EOS M mirrorless digital camera which canContinue reading “Lens test: Canon FL, FD and EF 50mm f/1.4 vs f/1.8”
Leaf
There’s been an awful lot of astronomical pictures and sciencey writings on this blog lately, so let’s take it down a notch. Here’s a picture of a leaf, taken for this week’s Photo Challenge. I pre-visualised this photo with a dry leaf. When I went looking in the garden this evening, all the dead leavesContinue reading “Leaf”
Art photographer
Ever since I tried my hand at sort-of-abstract fine art photography, I fancied dressing as a 1960s art photographer. I’ve had the idea of taking a self-portrait like this for ages, but I only just had the motivation to try it as this week’s Photo Challenge is to take a self portrait. Taking self portraitsContinue reading “Art photographer”
Holding hands
This week’s Photo Challenge is hands. As I was back at my parents’ house for Edmund’s birthday, I coerced him and his better half Lara into posing for me.
Nathan & Coralie
I don’t often get to shoot people* so I jumped at the chance to take pictures of my friends Nathan and Coralie. It was a fun shoot, and I think this shows in the pictures. * with a camera
Me!
It’s about time I had a new profile picture. I took these recently for a client. In the first picture I’m relaxing with a coffee, and in the second I’m pretending to have toothache. It’s probably best not to ask!
Bristol Aquarium
Bristol Aquarium has been open for a while, but I only just got around to going with some friends, for Hannah’s birthday. Shooting inside the aquarium was a challenge as it was quite dark. I had to use my fastest lens (a Canon 50mm f/1.8) even though it wasn’t the ideal lens for the job.Continue reading “Bristol Aquarium”
