These pictures were taken during a short break to Dunster for my birthday. Dunster is a tiny village near Minehead which has a wonderful castle and also a church that is one of the Somerset Towers. We also called in a Lynmouth, Lynton and Minehead. Driving to Lynmouth and Lynton involved crossing Exmoor. It wasContinue reading “Mini-break in Dunster”

Photographic news bulletin
I’ve got a few photographic things to write about, so I thought I’d do a mini news bulletin. New camera: 1920s Ensign Cameo For my birthday, my parents-in-law got me an Ensign Cameo view camera. It’s a real beauty with black leather and silver chrome trim, still shiny and bright. I’ve not been able toContinue reading “Photographic news bulletin”
Photos for sale
I’m not in photography to make money, but recently I have been asked by several people if my work is for sale. In response to demand, I’ve set up an online shop! You can visit the shop clicking this link, or by clicking Buy at the top of this page. If there’s a picture inContinue reading “Photos for sale”
Processing Kodachrome as a black & white reversal film
This post is aimed squarely at darkroom aficionados. I was given a roll of Kodak Kodachrome 40 in Super-8 format. It hasn’t been manufactured for years and conventional colour processing using the K-14 process has not been possible since 2010. Kodachrome does not contain coupled dyes so processing is not possible using C-41 (colour negative)Continue reading “Processing Kodachrome as a black & white reversal film”
Avonview Cemetery
With the news of local flooding tonight, I decided to walk down to Netham Weir to see what was going on. The river was noticeably swollen and had burst its banks in some places. The weir was nowhere to be seen. Compare the black & white image, taken in May 2013, with the colour imageContinue reading “Avonview Cemetery”
Diving in at the deep end of cinematography
OK, cinematography is a fancy word for it. I’ve been given a reel of Super-8 film that I want to use, despite various hurdles. Let me explain. I’ve had a collection of Super-8 films and a cine-projector for a while now. I even put a couple of them on YouTube. I also have a Super-8Continue reading “Diving in at the deep end of cinematography”
4000th negative
It’s not just the year 2014 that rolled over yesterday – I also developed two films and added the negatives to my database, which rolled over 4000 negatives too. The first film I shot with my Zorki 4 rangefinder, mostly at the German Christmas market in Bristol. I also took some pictures when my colleagueContinue reading “4000th negative”
Wide angle lenses
Since I embarked upon my Somerset Towers project, I’ve visited over a dozen churches across the country to photograph them with my Horseman 980 view camera. It’s barely made a scratch in the project, but I have learnt a lot already. View cameras are appropriate for architectural photography because they allow the photographer to captureContinue reading “Wide angle lenses”
Canon A-1
Released 1978 I own several Canon FD-mount SLRs but I’ve fancied an A-1 for a while. I think it’s the alluring black paint, rather than the silver fixtures of most contemporary SLRs. I think these hard-edged SLRs are much prettier than the curved plastic bodies that appeared in the 1980s. The A-1 also has theContinue reading “Canon A-1”
Mittens waits for Christmas
This picture was a happy accident while I was attempting to take a picture for the Advent-themed photo challenge this week. I was attempting to set up a snowglobe with lights behind it. I was also going to shake the snowglobe to set the snow swirling around. I was just testing focus when Mittens cameContinue reading “Mittens waits for Christmas”
