This week’s Photo Challenge is corners. I went out in search of interesting corners. There weren’t many, but I quite like this composition. I think it’s the way to square right angles of the sun shield contrast with the angle of the rest of the building.

Touchdown!
I spent this morning at Bristol Airport, watching aeroplanes take off and land. It was cold enough that nearby puddles were frozen though, but it was the first sunny day this year, so I braved the ice and waited around with my camera. I think the wait paid off, as I caught this jet burningContinue reading “Touchdown!”
Bristol Aquarium
Bristol Aquarium has been open for a while, but I only just got around to going with some friends, for Hannah’s birthday. Shooting inside the aquarium was a challenge as it was quite dark. I had to use my fastest lens (a Canon 50mm f/1.8) even though it wasn’t the ideal lens for the job.Continue reading “Bristol Aquarium”
Eden Project
A couple of weeks ago I visited the Eden Project. I haven’t been for a couple of years, and it was interesting to go in winter this time. Although the biomes are still heated, it is still winter for the plants and they are at different stages of their life cycle. It was slightly disappointingContinue reading “Eden Project”
Orion Nebula
Last night it was incredibly clear so with a few friends I ventured out to my favourite dark-sky spot in rural Somerset. The moon was below the horizon for most of the evening so it was sufficiently dark to see the Milky Way. We had a quick peek at Jupiter, as it’s easy to find,Continue reading “Orion Nebula”
What’s the story?
This week the photo challenge is “what’s the story?”. We have to take a portrait of a person in a setting where the environment tells you something about the person. I took a picture of my friend Ed, who collects model trains. The picture was taken in front of part of his layout.
Fireworks
Fireworks, you say? These ones were in the churchyard of All Saints, Fishponds. I managed to add some extra interest to the pictures by using a fisheye lens and including part of the church building. However I can’t decide if my favourite is one of the firework pictures, or the long exposure of the bonfire.
Astrophotography
It’s winter, it’s dark early, and the Arctic snap passing over the UK means it is nice and clear in the sky. Last night I went to my top-secret stargazing location in Somerset. It’s far enough to avoid the worst of Bristol’s light pollution, but there is still an orange tint in the sky. It’sContinue reading “Astrophotography”
Canon EOS 600D
Released 2011 I bought the 600D to replace the 450D. There was nothing wrong with the 450D but Canon sensors of that age are not great for astrophotography. The 600D offers photography at up to ISO 12800. The noise doesn’t matter since the images will be stacked later on. I own two 600D bodies, the other of whichContinue reading “Canon EOS 600D”
Bristol zoo (again)
We decided to go to Bristol zoo again today. We’ve been before, but I never get tired of watching the animals.
