I’ve been ill for a couple of days, but today I managed to find the strength to lift this extremely heavy red filter onto this book. It’s an idea I’ve been meaning to try for a few months.

Success with infrared photography
A while back I took an interest in infrared photography, and I bought a couple of rolls of Maco 820c infrared film. Using infrared film involves a huge amount of trial and error, and unlike digital cameras, you can’t take one or two pictures and check after each one. You have to shoot a wholeContinue reading “Success with infrared photography”
Infrared photos
I’ve dabbled with infrared photography before, but not had much luck. This time, I’m delighted with the results. If you want to read more about my method, please have a look at my other blog. If you just want to see the pictures – well here they are. Blue skies appear black and foliage appearsContinue reading “Infrared photos”
The night sky
This photo was composed from 329 exposures, each of 30 seconds, for a total of nearly three hours of shooting. It’s a view of the night sky over Bristol, looking generally northwards (all the stars rotate around the pole star Polaris, remember?). I think it’s beautiful.
Autoradiographic plates
Outdated medical technology isn’t normally the kind of thing I’d be interested in, or would write about – but I was given some old glass autoradiographic stripping plates. I didn’t know what they were at the time – I assumed they were normal photographic plates, but I’ve done a little light reading. Autoradiography The gistContinue reading “Autoradiographic plates”
Voigtländer Bessa
Another week, another new camera, and some more photos from it. These photos are taken with my “new” Voigtländer Bessa. I posted on here recently with some photos from a film that was still in the camera. With a camera from the late 1920s-1930s, it seemed fitting to visit a former industrial site – soContinue reading “Voigtländer Bessa”
Taking pictures of the night sky
I recently moved from a flat in Kingswood to a house in Fishponds, on the very outskirts of Bristol. It overlooks the massive Oldbury Court Estate, which shortly gives way to the countryside. Compared with Kingswood, there is hardly any visible light pollution here – at least to my urban-accustomed eyes. Back in Kingswood theContinue reading “Taking pictures of the night sky”
Photos from a Paulette
Recently I was given a Halina Paulette Electric, dating back to 1967. It’s similar to the Braun Paxette, but more cheaply made. As usual, I took it for a spin with some black and white film. The quality didn’t blow me away, but perhaps even more lacklustre was my inspiration that week. First here’s aContinue reading “Photos from a Paulette”
Wolf spider
I never realised I had arachnophobia until I zoomed into this photo and looked into the spider’s eyes… *shudder* I think this is a wolf spider, although I’m not sure. I trapped it in a pint glass, and it was big enough to touch the entire rim of the glass with its legs.
A face from the past
Hana’s dad picked me up a folding Voigtländer Bessa camera at a car boot sale in Exeter. To my surprise, it had some film in it – although unfortunately I didn’t find out until I’d opened the back. I developed the film in my darkroom, and found that, as expected, half the film was totallyContinue reading “A face from the past”
