This week the Photo Challenge is Leap, inspired by the leap year. There’s a lot of superstition around February 29th, but I’m going back to the astronomical basics. Leap years occur to nudge the Gregorian calendar back in sync with the solar year, and I’ve taken a picture of the sun setting over Bristol onContinue reading “Big, red sunset”

Running away from the camera
This week’s Photo Challenge is “running away from the camera”. It’s simple – just put the camera on a tripod, set the self-timer to 2 seconds, press the button, and run away. Here’s my effort, taken on Troopers Hill.
Another HDR experiment
This picture was taken on Trooper’s Hill as another test of my HDR technique. It certainly looks odd, but there’s a strange charm to it, I think.
HDR in a copper smelter
This picture is my first attempt at HDR. It was taken inside the chimney on Trooper’s Hill using a fisheye lens.
Numbers
Some time ago, Paul challenged me to do the numbers challenge. (This isn’t related to the Photo Challenge, by the way). The numbers challenge is simple. You put a film in your favourite camera, and take photos of numbers in order. On a 36-exposure film, you’d take pictures of the numbers 1-36 in order, asContinue reading “Numbers”
Ensign Ranger Special
Released 1953 This camera was a gift. It’s a fairly standard folding camera which prefers to be in the portrait orientation. Its main interesting feature is the built-in mask which allows the photographer to choose 6×9 or 6×6 exposures. See all photos taken with the Ranger. At a glance Lens Fixed 105mm f/4.5 Film 120Continue reading “Ensign Ranger Special”
Canon T50
Released 1983 This is a pretty boring camera in terms of photography. You are supposed to use it in program exposure mode. If you do that, it doesn’t tell you what aperture and shutter speed it chose. You can force it to do aperture-priority, but you still don’t know what shutter speed it chose. All PostsContinue reading “Canon T50”
Clevedon Pier & Troopers Hill
This film has been in my Mamiya RB67 since December 2011, when we went to Clevedon for Hannah’s birthday. Unfortunately a storm blew up while we were on the end of the pier with ridiculous amounts of wind and rain. Nonetheless, we’re English, and we sat there and damn well enjoyed it. When the rainContinue reading “Clevedon Pier & Troopers Hill”
Adverts from Playboy, 1962
In my job as a network engineer at a university, I recently had to go into the roof space of one of the older halls of residence. I stumbled across a stash of Playboy magazines dating from 1962 – presumably hidden in the out-of-bounds area by a student who lived there at the time. IContinue reading “Adverts from Playboy, 1962”
Meet Mittens
As if the internet didn’t already have enough kittens, Hannah and I adopted a rescue kitten called Mittens. She is a semi-feral cat and is quite afraid of people. After a few hours of being around her she let us stroke her briefly, but she usually hisses. She won’t let us pick her up, butContinue reading “Meet Mittens”
